In 1995 our family relocated to Florida, where I met one of my life long friends. We met as we were both waiting for our houses to be built in Weston. Our families became close. Kal and I played basketball practically every week and those were some of my happiest memories. Sweating, elbowing, laughing and generally have a good time. Kal was consistently enthusiastic about any new challenge or interest he took on. (And his enthusiasm and passion were contagious and not to be denied.) As a chef he was incredible and as a friend he was empathetic, thoughtful and generous, emotionally as well as with his culinary sharing. We put up storm shutters together during hurricane seasons and looked out for each other as best we could. (As we did our best navigating our careers and raising our families.)

In 2005 our family left South Florida but Kal and I stayed in touch. Amy & I visited family in Florida over the years and I made it a point to try and see him during those visits. Most of these photos are from those brief encounters. You will see a recurring friend named Paul, who I had played basketball with in San Francisco and ended up being a neighbor with Kal on Miami Beach. The final photo on this page is an older photo that I edited. It was the last photo Kal texted me, that he indicated was from 1972. I did my best to clean it up without altering too much. More recently, It was amazing to see him so excited about visiting with his grandchildren and sharing photos.

To say I will miss you, Kal, is an understatement. You made the world a little brighter showing love through your hospitality, grace and never losing that spark that made you special. Love you bro!
