The Blue Pool is a remarkable site where the McKenzie River re-emerges after a journey of approximately three miles through porous lava rock. This underground flow began approximately 1,600 years ago, following a lava flow from Belknap Crater that buried a segment of the river. The surrounding forest hike to the pool showcases an abundance of lava rock, adorned with lush moss and lichen, alongside picturesque running streams.
The pool's striking blue color arises from its exceptional water purity and consistently low temperature, remaining around 37-38 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. The clarity of the cold water allows it to selectively absorb red and green wavelengths of light, while blue wavelengths are reflected and scattered back to the observer. This effect not only enhances the brilliant blue color but also inhibits the growth of algae and other microorganisms, resulting in water that is remarkably clear, mirroring the sky and the cliffs that encircle it.Photographs as agents of change and enlightenment
